The Internacional Campus of Excellence Programme is set out in the 2015 University Strategy to modernize Spanish Universities. The objective of this is to promote strategic aggregations within universities and other institutions located in the campuses with the aim of creating “knowledge eco-systems” which will favour employment, social coherence and territorial economic development. The Government has already invested 590 Million Euros since the Campus of International Excellence Programme started in 2008.
All of the presented projects comply with the central lines in the Campus Programme. This involves a new concept which focuses on universities and in their interaction with research centres, scientific parks, technological centres, the productive surroundings and other agents, for the development of education eco-systems, research and innovation which will all contribute to the economic and social development of the local or regional surroundings.
The objective is to create a real environment of university life which is socially integrated in its or territorial area, of great quality and high service facilities, as well as improvements in environmental sustainability (a urban sustainable and healthy campus). Likewise, it intends to face up to challenges such as attracting the best students and researchers and the competence to locate scientific installations and companies with a high-added value within the areas of university campuses.
