The scientific capacity of the Biomedicine and Biotechnology area and Infrastructures will be strengthened by the opening of the headquarters of the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria (IBBTEC), in the installations of the Scientific and Technological Park of Cantabria (PCTCAN). This Centre which has mixed ownership (UC-CSIC ) is supported by the Government of Cantabria.
The total cost of the Project, which will be financed in 2011, amounts to 13 million Euros . The building will have an approximate surface of 6000 square meters divided into four floors and one basement. The building work started last October and will finish in 2011. The process of acquisition of scientific equipment and staff recruitment is also set in motion.
The IBBTEC will have a staff of more than 150 researchers devoted to two main fields: Developmental Biology , Neurobiology , Molecular Biology , Immunology and Molecular Microbiology. From a transversal outlook, the IBBTEC research has an important component of genomic approximation.
The goal of the Institute is to do scientific research of excellence and at the same time develop a relevant activity of knowledge transfer in its area of work. The IBBTEC is created with the purpose of becoming a reference centre and focus of attraction for biology oriented companies, mainly in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological and food industry.
The construction of IBBTEC headquarters will contribute in consolidating the Cluster activities in Biomedicine and Biotechnology, result of the cooperation between UC, CSIC and SCS, and especially between its two main research centres : IBBTEC and IFIMAV. Likewise, the first steps have already been given to create the CIBIC, a collaborative structure which joins together the research activities, training, transfer of technology and innovation in the biomedical and biotechnological area.
